Econtainers Puts Its First ECGU Serial-Coded Containers into Service

New 20-foot Econtainers Global container with owner code ECGU 260043 and ISO type code 22G1

Econtainers Global has put into operation its first containers bearing its own serial code, a milestone in the company's international growth strategy in the maritime and logistics sector. The units are already sailing on international routes, identified under the owner code ECGU.

What is an owner code?

Every container in international trade carries a unique identification number under the ISO 6346 standard. The first three letters are the owner code, registered with the Bureau International des Containers (BIC); the fourth letter, U, identifies freight containers. They are followed by a six-digit serial number and a check digit. On the unit in the photo, for example, the marking reads ECGU 260043 3, next to the size and type code 22G1 (a 20-foot, 8'6"-high general-purpose container).

Having its own code means Econtainers containers are recognized inside the maritime industry's standard identification system, just like the equipment of carriers and leasing companies. You can learn more about how these markings work in our article on container tracking.

Why it matters

According to the company, this step strengthens its operating capacity and builds a more robust structure to serve the needs of international trade. Owning containers under a proprietary code allows:

  • More efficient asset management across markets.
  • Better traceability of each unit throughout its life.
  • More precise control of logistics operations.

It also gives the company more tools to serve importers, exporters, logistics operators and businesses that need equipment available in different markets, including customers who lease containers or ship under the shipper-owned container (SOC) model.

"Seeing our first containers sailing under our own serial code is a source of pride for the whole organization. It is the result of years of work and of the trust of our customers, and it strengthens our presence in the maritime industry."
— Andrés Valencia, CEO of Econtainers Global

More options for customers

The new assets strengthen the company's value proposition, giving customers more options and more operational flexibility at a time when container availability has become strategic for supply chains.

The maritime industry has faced major challenges with equipment availability, supply-chain volatility and the optimization of international transport. Owning equipment is a competitive advantage that improves operational planning and the ability to respond to the market.

With international presence in more than 27 countries and more than 12 years in the container industry, Econtainers Global continues to strengthen its position as a specialized provider of shipping container solutions. Contact our team to buy or lease equipment.
