Container Quality Control: Everything You Need to Know

The latest generation of containers comes with new technical solutions that increase their resistance to corrosion and mechanical damage. Even so, it is worth taking extra steps to protect your shipping containers from damage. First of all, it is advisable to maintain them regularly so they can stay in service for much longer.
How to care for a container
The conditions in which shipping containers travel often take a heavy toll on them. Corrosion is the main problem, and unfortunately no measure can guarantee 100% protection. To keep a container fleet in perfect condition and in line with the applicable regulations, every container should be checked by a specialized service at least once a year. There are also situations that call for action before or after each use:
- Odors. Containers can pick up odors that transfer to the cargo, especially food. The source can be goods previously carried in the container or particularly strong cleaning products. To prevent this, use biodegradable cleaning products, preferably unscented or lightly scented. After using them, rinse the container with plenty of water and ventilate it until it is perfectly dry and odor-free.
- Stains. When machinery or greasy goods are transported, oil stains or dirt can remain and later contaminate food or ruin textiles. Do not use the container for those kinds of goods after carrying products that leave residue. If you must, do a deep clean with a suitable product and keep the previous point in mind.
- Holes in the container walls. In use, a container can suffer scrapes, impacts or pressure that cause dents, erosion or paint damage, and eventually a hole or crack. Dust, water and other contaminants can get in through those openings and compromise the quality of the cargo. Erosion and paint defects can be prevented by applying one or more coats of weather-resistant paint. Once holes exist, welding equipment is needed for a proper repair.
- Damaged floors. Container floors are made of wooden boards that deteriorate with time and use, losing their shape and coming loose. The boards can break and splinter under the weight of the cargo and constant friction. Check the condition of the floor boards periodically and make the necessary repairs in time. Splintered boards should be sanded. Apply a weather-resistant coating to the wood, and replace broken or badly worn boards.
- Mold. Containers are usually exposed to a lot of humidity, which creates the ideal environment for mold, especially on the floor boards. Mold can contaminate the cargo and produce bad odors. You can prevent it by spraying the whole interior with an industrial disinfectant, then ventilating the space well until it is completely dry.
