Buying a container can be a very viable and convenient option if your company plans to transport products or raw materials on a regular basis. Containers are also highly resistant to bad weather and physical impacts, which means your goods do not get damaged when the delivery run is long.

5 practical tips for buying any type of container

Buying any type of shipping container must be well thought out. It is not a decision you can afford to take lightly, because they are fairly expensive storage units.

To choose successfully, here are five points to consider so you make the right decision:

  1. Choose the container size you need. To pick the right size, you need to be aware of the type of cargo you plan to transport. You will find 20ft and 40ft containers. These are the most common dimensions and let you move a large amount of cargo. They are ideal for loading and transporting non-perishable food, grain, manufactured products and raw materials.
  2. Consider the container's grade. Containers are commonly classified as grade A, B and C. Grade A units are completely new. They are in the best condition, free of dents and knocks; the main drawback of this group is that they are the most expensive. Grade B units are usually in average condition, meaning they are not new shipping containers but have seen very little use. Their price is reasonable. Finally, grade C units are the cheapest and most affordable, but they show the most knocks, dents and minor damage from corrosion.
  3. Decide which type of container suits you. There is a wide variety of containers. General-purpose units are made of steel and are spacious, relatively light compartments. There is also the refrigerated type, which has a special system to keep the interior temperature low enough to transport perishables, medicines, vaccines or substances that need sub-zero environments to keep from spoiling.
  4. Check its general condition. No matter whether it is a grade A, B or C container, we recommend checking that, if new, it has no corrosion damage or dents. If used, assess its imperfections. If those imperfections put the safety of your cargo at risk, do not buy it and demand a refund or exchange. In addition, it is useful to check the condition of the doors and the walls, inside and outside the unit.
  5. Documentation and legal matters. Do not skip this tip for any reason. Make sure the container's paperwork is in order and that buying it does not breach any rule in the applicable regulations. It is essential to demand a legally valid invoice proving that your purchase was made properly. It never hurts to check the seller's reputation. Do not take risks trying to save a few dollars. Sometimes it is better to pay a bit more for the certainty of a reliable purchase.

Follow these five useful tips and we are sure you will succeed in choosing the ideal container for you. Owning one of these units lets you move a large amount of cargo and improves your company's logistics. We wish you every success!
